Cloth'kins
Instead of paper napkins, we're using cloth'kins now. I bought several different colors of cheap cloth, in the bargain bin at a big box store. Then I just cut them up into approximately rectangles, but they're all just a little bit different size. No biggie, they work perfect for the simple job they need to do, and they look great on the dining room table.
They look great just stacked at the end of the table, that's right where we keep them all the time. I was going to put them in a drawer or on a shelf, but eventually we just started leaving them out, and now they are their own decorative piece.
The ends get frayed a bit more after each wash, and so I just clip the worst stringy bits off. But I actually kind of like the frayed edges, and I'm leaving it like this. If you are a clever sewing person, you could get rid of this problem by finishing the edges with a simple stitch.
I don't even stack them too neatly when company is coming over. I just leave them like this, and people can feel free to take two or three. They also make decent coasters for drinks if you move on into the living room.
